Xano Tutorial for Beginners | Low-Code API Builder Demo

If you've ever wanted to build a fully functional backend without writing thousands of lines of code, Xano is the tool you need in your workflow. In this beginner-friendly walkthrough, you'll learn how to get started with Xano from scratch — from creating your account all the way to setting up API endpoints and exploring the platform's key features.

Creating Your Account and Getting Started

Head over to the official Xano website and click Try Xano for Free in the top corner. You can sign up using your personal or business email, or speed things up by authenticating with your Google account. Follow the on-screen instructions to get through the initial setup steps.

Setting Up Your Workspace with AI

One of the most exciting parts of the onboarding experience is the workspace setup. Xano gives you two options: Create with AI or Start from Scratch. If you're a beginner or intermediate user, the AI option is the recommended starting point. Simply describe your app idea — for example, "social media app" — and Xano will automatically generate your database tables and basic API structure. From there, you can customize everything to fit your needs. Just make sure you're not connected to a VPN or aggressive antivirus software during this step, as it can interfere with the generation process.

Navigating the Xano Dashboard

Once your workspace is created, you'll land on the Xano homepage. The left-side panel is your command center. Here's what you'll find:

  • Instances — These represent your backend environments (production, staging, development). Each instance contains its own APIs and data.
  • API Builder — This is where you create and manage your API endpoints. You can add API groups, define endpoints for CRUD operations, authentication, or file uploads, and run them directly inside the platform to check for errors.
  • AI Tools — Xano integrates AI to help you generate and optimize backend logic using natural language prompts. This is especially useful if you don't have deep technical experience.
  • Tasks — Automate actions on a schedule or based on event triggers. Note that this feature requires a premium subscription.
  • Library — Store reusable functions, snippets, and modules to keep your logic clean and consistent across APIs and tasks.
  • Settings — Configure environment variables, authentication settings, team management, API keys, and security options project-wide.

Importing Data and Adding Authentication

Xano makes it easy to bring in existing data. You can import from Airtable, upload a CSV, or paste data directly into a database table. You can also set up third-party authentication with services like Google, Facebook, LinkedIn, Magic Link, and Twitter, allowing your users to log in with the platforms they already use.

Why Xano Is Worth Exploring

Whether you're building a full backend service or simply need to connect a front-end app to a database, Xano gives you the speed, scalability, and flexibility to get there — without the usual backend headaches. The free plan offers a solid foundation to start experimenting, and upgrading unlocks even more powerful automation and collaboration features.
