What is a Workspace

If you're just getting started with Xano, one of the first concepts you'll encounter is the workspace. Understanding what a workspace is — and how to set one up — will help you stay organized as you build out your projects.

What Is a Workspace?

A workspace in Xano is essentially a separate container for each project you're building. Within a single Xano instance, you can have multiple workspaces running side by side. Each workspace is completely isolated from the others, meaning your projects won't interfere with one another. That said, all workspaces share the same compute resources provided by your instance, so you get efficiency without sacrificing separation.

Think of it like having different rooms in the same building — each room is its own space, but they're all under the same roof.

Creating a New Workspace

To create a workspace, you'll start by selecting a use case that matches what you're building. From there, you have two options: start from scratch or let Xano's AI assistant do the heavy lifting.

If you choose the AI assistant, all you need to do is enter a plain-language description of what you'd like to build. The assistant will then generate the structure it thinks you'll need — tables, fields, and more — based on your description. For example, describing an online bookstore will produce a ready-to-go data structure tailored to that concept.

Once you review what the AI has generated, you can make any adjustments before committing. When everything looks good, hit the Create button.

Naming and Configuring Your Workspace

Before finalizing, you'll have the opportunity to give your workspace a meaningful name — now is the best time to do that. You'll also be prompted to select a frontend if you already have one in mind. If you haven't decided yet, you can simply skip that option and move forward. Press Create Workspace and your new workspace will be ready to use.

Adding Sample Data

Once your workspace is live, a great next step is to populate your tables with sample data so you can start testing right away. Xano includes a Generate Records option that automatically creates dummy data for any table. You can use this on your user table, your author table, or any other table in your workspace to get a feel for how your data will look and behave.

Following the Setup Checklist

Xano provides an interactive checklist inside your workspace to guide you through the remaining setup steps. This checklist is a helpful reference point as you build out your backend, ensuring you don't miss anything important along the way.

With your workspace created and your sample data in place, you're ready to start building.
