Building AI agents in Xano is straightforward, but getting the prompting right is where most people hit a wall. The quality and consistency of your agent depends heavily on how well your prompts are written — and that's exactly why Xano includes a built-in Prompt Assistant to help you craft them.
When you're creating or editing an AI agent in Xano, you'll notice two places where the Prompt Assistant is available. At the top of the editor, you'll find the System Prompt Assistant, which is designed to help you define how your agent behaves at a foundational level. Further down, there's a second prompt assistant for the user prompt — same concept, just tailored to what the user sends. Both work in essentially the same way.
Selecting the System Prompt Assistant opens a modal with two sides: an editor on the left and an input area on the right where you drop in your initial prompt. Your starting prompt doesn't need to be long or detailed — even a short description of what you want your agent to do is enough to get started.
Once you submit it, the assistant extrapolates from your input and generates a full, structured system prompt. It fills in behaviors, capabilities, tool usage guidelines, and more. It'll also think through gaps in your initial description and may come back with follow-up questions or recommendations if it needs more context from you.
After the assistant processes your input, you'll see its full response along with an explanation of its reasoning. If it has questions or suggestions, you can continue the conversation right there in the same window — just type your responses and keep refining until the prompt feels right.
When you're happy with the result, scroll down to preview the generated prompt. You'll see it's broken into clearly defined sections: role definition, capabilities and tools, behavioral guidelines, dynamic context, and output expectations. This structure is exactly how a well-formed agent prompt should look.
Once the prompt is ready, click the Use This Prompt button to insert it directly into your editor. From there, hit Update and Close to save your changes. That's all it takes — your agent now has a professionally structured system prompt without you having to write it from scratch.
Using the Prompt Assistant is one of the fastest ways to level up your AI agent builds in Xano, especially if you're still getting comfortable with prompt engineering.
