IGNITE Case Study

Mar 10, 2022

Having worked for many years as a server and server trainer, Kevin Kennedy, Founder and President of Six Figure Server, had seen the impact that detailed performance tracking can have on a server or bartender’s ability to improve. “Waitstaff members need to realize that they are essentially running their own businesses,” Kevin says. “To maximize their income they need to know their numbers and then use these metrics to continue to develop their skills.”

When Kevin was unable to find a ready-made system that went beyond simply tracking his tips, he used spreadsheets to get in-depth insight into his own performance as a server. His idea for the IGNITE app was to take those spreadsheets and “put them on steroids” in order to give servers and bartenders the data they need to improve their performance and make more money.

Because he could not afford to hire a developer, Kevin knew he was going to have to take the do-it-yourself approach to developing the app.

“As a tech guy,” Kevin says, “I can design an app. But I’m not a coder. I found a no-code platform for the app’s front-end, but I wasn’t satisfied with the database feature that came with this platform. So I started looking for something more powerful to run the app’s backend.”

Kevin really did his research, because he understood that once he started building on a platform it would take a great deal of work to switch over to another.

When Kevin learned about Xano’s no code backend platform he immediately realized that this was the solution he was looking for.

“My biggest fear in looking for a platform,” Kevin shares, “was the commitment. But I didn’t have that fear with Xano, because I saw that it not only has a great deal of depth in terms of functionality, it also has pretty much limitless scalability.”

As Kevin dove into using Xano, he really appreciated the way that Xano empowers non developers to be able to do the work themselves. In addition to participating in the Xano users’ forum, Kevin also contacted the Xano customer service team as needed and watched the numerous “Q & A” YouTube videos that the customer service team posts.

Within a month Kevin had IGNITE up and running on Xano, in a way that greatly improved the speed and user experience of the app’s front-end.

“Xano is extremely powerful yet super simple to use,” Kevin explains. “Plus, you can choose how powerful you want it to be. You can use Xano as a simple database or build a full-out tech deck on it.”

Kevin chose to take advantage of some of Xano’s more complex capabilities and use it as the “brains” of the IGNITE app. When a server enters data about a shift, Xano does all of the calculations, including pulling in outside data. Within milliseconds it then sends the results to the front-end to be displayed for the user.

“With Xano,” Kevin concludes, “I can do everything that needs to be done without hiring a developer. But it is so scalable that I’ll be able to continue using it even after my business reaches the point where I can hire a team of developers to run our tech and app.”
